Deep Neural Networks for Sequence Modeling (Language + Time Series)

Presenter: Alex Conway, Numberboost, CTO

Modeling language is hard. There are long-running dependencies with ideas that can span paragraphs and we also have to deal with the intricacies of expression including sarcasm, ambiguity and polysemy. There have been many remarkable results in computer vision - for example ImageNet where the state of the art has been beaten and the algorithms are more accurate than humans. Computer vision is also inherently easier to grasp because it is visual and the most common representation - “convolution" - is easy to visualize. The first obvious question when modeling language is how to represent it numerically so that you can fit a model. One topic that we will focus on is semantic vector spaces and Word2Vec. Then when we consider how to advance beyond a simple “bag of words” model that ignores word order, we will consider that language is actually a sequence (like time series) and we can apply deep learning models that perform well on sequences such as recurrent neural networks (LSTMs and GRUs) and 1-dimensional convolutional neural networks that do “backpropagation through time” to build powerful language and time series models. The talk will include code samples and practical examples.

Re-imagine how the delivery of HR, talent, learning, recruitment and performance management processes are being transformed by Cognitive insight

Chatbots, robots, virtual assistants, and other devices powered by business algorithms are rapidly joining the ranks of workers in every industry and profession. It’s up to human resource (HR) professionals to cultivate these innovations for the opportunities they bring to the company.

The biggest driver of AI’s impact in the HR industry is the massive growth of big data. Until now, we haven’t had access to simple software systems with which to track and analyse internal employee data such as sick days, leave requests, hiring trends, workflow, etc. In South Africa today, most businesses have undergone some degree of digital transformation and lean on various  type of technology. HR professionals are recognizing that this valuable data and the insights teased from it play a major role in reducing risk and driving decision-making, when it comes to talent management and organisational performance.

In its 2017 Global Human Capital Trends report, “Rewriting the rules for the digital age,” Deloitte issues a call-to-action for companies to completely reconsider their organisational structure, talent and HR strategies to keep pace with digital disruption. “Technology is advancing at an unprecedented rate and these innovations have completely transformed the way we live, work and communicate, both globally and here in South Africa” said Trevor Page, Director Human Capital at Deloitte Consulting.  “Technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), mobile platforms, sensors, and social collaboration systems have revolutionised the way we live, work, and communicate; and the pace is only accelerating,”

AI in the Recruitment Revolution is having immense impact in improving traditional recruiting processes; introducing  virtual assistants for recruiters is one such way  in which recruitment can become less time-consuming. AI promises to augment recruiting with semantic search, people -analytics, real-time monitoring of performance, augmented reality tools to assist in interviews, and enhancing decision making by cultural fit analysis; though all these are still subject to successful implementation in the times to come. Unconscious Biases is one of the deeply rooted shortcomings of HR professionals, as no matter how self-aware we are, human decisions are still influenced to a degree by subjective opinion.

AI is also influencing Productivity Management be it selling, production, customer service or any parameter of Balance score card, thereby impacting factors around greater engagement as well as Retention. One of the most promising tools that AI could generate is a performance review of employee groups on a monthly basis and generating rewards for the delivery for the corresponding period.

Benefits of attending include:

  • Appreciate what AI actually is and its current and future impact on HR
  • Understand how AI has begun to transform HR Management, functions, roles, responsibilities, priorities and policies
  • Appreciate how deep learning systems can and are advancing HR
  • Learn how AI is changing staff training and development
  • Get exposed to how AI is influencing recruitment and selection
  • Foster an understanding of how AI can advance your payroll & payroll functions
  • Learn about the challenges of AI adoption and  deployment in the HR Environment

8. Barclays' Rise Event - AI, Machine Learning, Bots in Wealth Management - 12 October 2016

MIIA has participating in another Barclays Rise Event on the 12th of October 2016, where the audience includes senior executives in wealth management and investment that were keen to orientate themselves with respect to the relevant global trends and cutting edge fintech and innovation. The focus is again on artificial intelligence, robo-advisors for wealth management, investment and insurance, big data and machine learning in finance as well as Blockchain technology. Companies are introducing robo-advisors and virtual banking assistants to simplify communications and offer a more personalized experience for customers, that rely on natural language processing (NLP), data mining and human-like reasoning developed by deep learning algorithms.

7. Rise to the Challenge: Big Data, AI, and Machine Learning - 20 September 2016

MIIA has participated in another Rise Cape Town event called "Rise to the Challenge: Big Data, AI, and Machine Learning". See photos hereRise to the Challenge is an events series exploring the technology areas that are shaping the future of the financial industry (organized during the same week across all Rise sites globally). For this event, Rise is bringing together topic experts, startups, VCs, academia and Barclays senior leaders to host a thought-provoking discussion around Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. Rise to the Challenge aims to shake the current thinking and identify the opportunities and challenges that banks and startups face. Conversations will critically assess where to steer the future focus of investing in Fintech. Each event will identify a specific challenge area to help the innovators in the financial industry focus their curiosity and start experimenting with new ideas. Using Rise Crowd Rise to The Challenge Series will collate challenges the business face globally to identify new business opportunities, the most promising startups in respective areas and invite collaboration opportunities.

6. Machine Intelligence / Smart Technology for Education - 15 September 2016

MIIA has also given a presentation to Stellenbosch University's Division for Institutional Research and Planning about AI / Machine Intelligence / Smart Technology and its applications in Education.

5. Western Cape strategic round table conversation on the 4th Industrial Revolution - 15 September 2016

MIIA was also represented at a strategic round table discussion with the Western Cape government and the technology entrepreneurship ecosystem with respect to the Digital Economies and the 4th Industrial Revolution. Apart from government representatives (Minister of Economic Opportunities; Economic Development & Tourism; Strategic Economic Accelerators and Development, Economic Sector Support; Digital Leadership; Economic Research and Development, Asset Management and Systems, Provincial Treasury, and Trade and Investment), other organizations such Barclays, ABSA, Accelerate Cape Town, CITI, Webhelp SA, and Red Tape Reduction Unit were also represented by their key leadership.

The strategic conversation was with a small group of Western Cape (WC) leaders to engage on the resilience and preparedness of the WC to take up the opportunities and threats arising from digital disruption. The World Economic Forum has elevated the notion of the 4th industrial revolution and raised awareness of the impact it has on government and business sectors. Disruptive technologies will have profound effects on all value-chains and displays opportunities and challenges across global economies. The purpose of discussion was to determine the fundamentals for the development of a strategic approach to this for our economy and in particular for digital industries in the Western Cape. The “global digital economy accounted for 22 percent of the world’s economy in 2015. And it’s rapidly growing, as we forecast those numbers to increase to 25 percent by 2020, up from 15 percent in 2005.” (Accenture, 2016) The participation helps to mould the direction and building blocks to an integrated approach in order for it to support needs of business and government in the Western Cape.

4. Barclays' Rise Africa Event - 31 August 2016

The focus of a series of Rise community events in Cape Town was artificial intelligence, robo-advisors for wealth management, investment and insurance, big data and machine learning in finance as well as Blockchain technology. In the most recent event the emphasis was on how these technologies are impacting the Insurance industry (which has clearly not yet been impacting us much as wealth management and investment). Companies are introducing robo-advisors and virtual banking assistants to simplify communications and offer a more personalized experience for customers, that rely on natural language processing (NLP), data mining and human-like reasoning developed by deep learning algorithms. Blockchain, the software that underlies cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, is another potentially transformative computational technology. Blockchains might be deployed as a secure cloud-based management system for all manner of robotic and otherwise automated operations, in cases as diverse as finance, manufacturing, hospitals, self-driving vehicles, and home environments. Experts are applying deep learning in blockchain to move and store data securely and privately, dropping the cost and complexity of financial transactions. See presentation for more details on intelligent virtual assistants and machine learning in Finance (with some focus on Insurance and Wealth Management).

3. Barclays' Rise Africa Event - 12 August 2016

MIIA has also partnered with Barclays' Rise Africa, a community of bright thinkers and doers, from rising startups to industry leaders, working together to create the future of financial services. Through its global network of connected sites in seven of the world’s top FinTech ecosystems, Rise delivers numerous programmes that facilitate rapid engagement between Barclays and the Rise community in order to solve some of the biggest challenges facing financial services. The focus of a recent Rise community event (August 2016) at their Woodstock Exchange facilities in Cape Town was Artificial Intelligence, robo-advisors for wealth management, investment and insurance, big data and machine learning in finance as well as Blockchain technology. The audience included senior executives in wealth management and investment that were keen to orientate themselves with respect to the relevant global trends and cutting edge fintech and innovation. Along with Jacques Ludik's presentation representing MIIA (as well as AI startups Cortex Logic and Bennit AI specializing in cognitive applications such as intelligent virtual assistants), there were also presentations from Pivotal AnalyticsClevva as well as a Blockchain specialist.  The outline of my presentation on Artificial Intelligence, Robo-advisors for Wealth Management and Investment, and Big Data, Analytics and Machine Learning in Finance was as follows (see link for details):
